repeated problem with voltage regulator--why? 700

my 740 and i have been through three voltage regulators in the past year and 1/2. each time the regulator itself was ok but one of the little brushes had broken off. its like the braided wire has gotten worn through right at the point it joins into the top of its groove.
fifty bucks for a new regulator isnt too bad to fix the problem, and it could be even cheaper if i was more skillful with the soldering iron. but its a pain in the ass to keep getting stuck somewhere because the alternator stops working because the stupid little brush thing breaks off. maybe i installed the new regulators wrong. they seemed to work ok for a while but just eventually crapped out. maybe its just dumb luck-one of thos things
is there some trick to positioning the regulator in a way that will keep the brushes from getting dislodged or is this just oart of the joy of driving a volvo?
