Blue Silicon life saver for M46 OD 200 1983

86 OD rear case was easy to use on 83 car with cable driven speedometer by just swapping out the plug (held in by large O-ring) and substituting the drive system from 83 into the resulting hole. Seems to work OK so far. A little juddering of the speedo, but not bad.
Now for the "trouble". I used brass washers at the rear stud junctions to try to stop leaks...didn't work till I used a layer of Blue Silicon between the washer and the OD case. No leaks for now.
Am I looking at leaks in the future? I know the spots on the driveway will tell.
any other way? How long does silicon last?
Thanks,
el Raidman
