Steering Rack 700 1987

Since nobody has replied, I will take a shot. I have steering rack experience with my wife's '85 BMW 325e....started leaking when the car was 8 years old. Added fluid for about a week, then the seal completely blew. You will not lose steering, but it will take much greater effort to turn the wheel.

I would put in a rebuilt rack as soon as you can. If you don't and the seals fail suddenly, the pump will run dry which may damage it...then you will need to replace both rack and pump. Rebuilt racks are not too expensive. For my wife's car, the rebuilt rack was guaranteed for life. This rebuilt rack is now 11 years old and going strong. Not too much of a problem to replace on my wife's car; I have not changed the rack on my 740.

Hope this helps some,
