I drove my "new" 1993 240 from Atlanta to Birmingham yesterday - a 300 mile round trip.
Part 1 - On the way there, I noticed the temperature gauge needle had dropped to the very bottom and remained there. I was almost to my destination, so I let it go. As I was returning to Atlanta, I drove a while on the interstate and then began to worry that the thermostat was stuck. I stopped at a station and felt the hoses to and from the engine to the radiator. Both were hot and everything seemed fine. When I got going again, the gauge started working again - but just for about 10 minutes and then it dropped again.
Part 2 - When I arrived in Atlanta, I exited the interstate ramp to get on another interstate to take me home. As I accelerated off the ramp, I realize my transmission will not go to fourth gear. It was as if the overdrive were engaged, but it wasn't. I switched the overdrive on and off to no avail. I had to exit the interstate and take back roads home.
Question - Is there any way these two things could be related? Also, is the "stuck in third gear" symptom indicative of a bad overdrive or a short in the overdrive? Please don't let this be the tranny! It just seems strange to me to have these electrical gremlins all of a sudden.
The only thing I have done electrically to the car is to switch the ignition and battery wires going to the aftermarket stereo (it had been installed wrong).
Thanks,
Bob
