My temp guages works...but is it effective? Also Coolent questions. 200

I fixed the temp guage on my 1988 240 by pulling out the comp board and then putting it back in. It works great. However, because of the nature of the compboard, is the temp guage in my car really just for show, or will it actally give me important info on time. Would I be better of ridding the car of the temp guage for a more accurate reading, or do I have nothing to worry about. Also thinking that I will replace the coolent real soon. I guess since the sticker in the Engene compartment says use Volvo aproved coolent only...I actaully have to go down to the dealor and get there coolent or be sorry? A little surprising...guess I would do that if that is what my Volvo actually want's not just my local dealor.

Thanks and happy bricking!
