noise and no od. 700 1990

I was driving at about 65 and heard a loud flapping sound which I thought was the spoiler on my Thule roof rack; opened sunroof and felt around, stopped and no sign of a problem, continued with the noise slightly still evident at 50, and then later realized that I had no od. ??? The noise was clearly from the top of the car! The dash light comes on and off with the button but no od. After leaving the car for a while and driving later, there's no noise but still no od.
anyone?
