1993 245 auto rear hatch lock confusion 200 1993

I have a 1993 245 wagon. It has auto-locks (driver's door lock from inside button or outside with key will lock all doors). I've owned the car about two years now, and always assumed that this auto-lock included the rear hatch. To my surprise one day a month or two ago, I discovered that the rear hatch was not locked after locking the rest of the car from the driver's door. I looked in the owner's manual, and on page 44 it says :

"Central lock - The vehicle is equipped with a central lock system. This means the lock on the driver's door automatically controls the locks on the other doors (including the trunk on Sedan models and the tailgate on the wagon model)."

So according to the manual, it should be locking automatically. But then it goes on and talks about the trunk can be disconnected from the central locking by withdrawing the key from the trunk in a specific way. Can this also be done for the wagon ? I've tried, but it doesn't seem to support this feature for the wagon hatch.

Can another late model 245 owner confirm whether or not the hatch auto-locks on thir car ?

If it's broken on mine, does anyone know where to look for the source of the problem ?
