Best way to fix tailgate wiring? 200 1981

My 245 has wires with cracked insulation going through the tailgate hinges, so I'm gonna have to splice good wires in there.

Has anyone done this before, and what pitfalls can I expect? It looks like I may have to remove each hinge independently to gain access enough to splice it. I'll try and find some of that flexible black wire tube/conduit to put around my new wires, but finding a small enough size to take those wires throught that limited space may be tough.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
