intermittent power loss confusion. 120-130

While cruising on the highway the motor will stutter and lose power, but a downshift and acceleration will pull strong and smooth to 5000rpm no problem, then when cruising again it happens.
This started happening about a month ago while I had "loaner" carbs on the car that were running fairly rich to compensate for being on a bigger engine. Thought it was a sparkplug fouling out from the over-rich carbs. When the new carbs arrived and new sparkplugs installed I thought it would be resolved, but it happened again yesterday.
Thought it may just be the o-drive low on oil and not fulling engaging, but it occured in fourth too just not as badly or as often.
scratching my head (as usual) as to where to look next.
FYI engine is 2.2 liter with all the IPD goodies(header, torque cam, crane ignition, etc.).

thanks in advance,

-Erik
