Hard starting after initial start 900

As you may have guessed from my username, I own a '91 940T. I'm new to the Volvo world, so forgive me if my questions are naive.

When I leave for work in the morning, after the car has been parked for 8 hours or so, it starts up and runs fine, even at a red light idle. After parking and sitting for another hour or so if I try to start it again, I get a spudder, an RPM drop to about 900 and then it dies. Usually on a third attempt and with a little gas, it starts up and runs fine again but with a little harder idle than normal.

Relays, belts, fuel pump, ignition modules - all possible causes I guess, but I've never seen behavior quite like this. Any ideas?

Thanks
Ben
