Air Conditioner question 200 1992

The AC unit on my 1992 245 wagon isn't cooling very good so I will take it to a shop to get it checked/refilled. The mechanic already told me over the phone it's probably got a leak and he won't know how serious it is until he adds a pound of R12 and checks it.

Is there anything I can do to test it myself (easily) or at I at the mercy of the mechanic? I just don't want to get "taken to the cleaners".
