Horrible horrible screaching! 200 1990

Not the brakes this time, but the steering. This winter my 1990 244 started getting the "hard to turn on cold mornings" syndrome that a few have mentioned around here, but it always went away after a turn or two. Whenever I turn the wheel all the way to the left or right, I've also heard an awful screaching noise that seems to be coming from somewhere up front.

Driving home today, I got that awful screaching while driving straight today, and the power steering seemed to give out. This only lasted about 5-10 seconds, but its already done this a few times today. I checked the power steering fluid, appears to be full but just slightly milky, not sure if that's normal or not.

Any ideas? And more importantly, is it safe to still drive this car? The mechanic said he can't look at it until next Wednesday, and I'd prefer not to be carless for that time.
