Engine Seizure Help 89 740GL

T-belt looked fine, there is a definate metal on metal grinding noise when cranking. Then it cathes and the starter freezes. What if the engine had no oil, would that cause this? I haven't checked the oil in a few months but it never burned any just leaked a little once and a while.
