thermostat housing bolts 900 1995

I'm trying to replace my thermostat on my '95 960 but can't get one of the housing bolts loose. I've tried PB blaster several times but no luck. I've put the #40 torx bit on an extension and hit it with a hammer to shock it loose but no luck. Looks to be an aluminum bolt into the aluminum housing.
I guess I could leave it alone since the thermostat currently works but I would like to change it out. I'm planning a 2000 mile vacation in a week and don't know if the thermostat has ever been changed (88,000 miles) so I'm trying to do it myself since it is such an inexpensive part.
Should I try it when the engine is somewhat hot?
I'm a shade tree mechanic and I'm afaid I'm about to strip the bolt head.
any advise is welcome.
(The thermostat is located at the other end of the top radiator hose...isn't it? )
