164/144 shocks -- identical? 140-160 1972

I'm probably going to replace my shocks when doing springs -- Bilsteins are the favorite, but I asked my mechanic if I could use a set of NOS shocks marked for 144/145s. He said they won't work as the car is heavier. Is this right? I've been told that 140s and 164s take the same Bilsteins.
