Buzzing sound under car 200 1986

First post on this board. Volvo owner, exclusively, since 1980. Just purchasd 1986 245 for my daughter and looks good but needs some updating. The car starts right up but after 4-5 minutes at idle starts buzzing down under. Took it in and mechanic said new fuel pump, the pump was getting very hot. Now I was reading this thread last week where someone was saying they had a similar problem and thought it was the in tank sender making the buzz. My question is would the in-tank not working cause the main pump to be hot? The mechanic is not deep volvo but has performed decent work in the past. How hard a job is this to swap out on your own? Done plugs and oil in the past. Thats it. Thanks.
