transmission cooler 700 1990

My transmission works fine (AW70 automatic) when cold. After it gets hot it does not engage well in reverse. My question is: will installing a separate transmission cooler keep the tranny a lot cooler? If it does I am thinking maybe reverse might work better? Who knows? (I have flushed it 3 times, changed the tranny mount, and adjusted the kickdown cable).
