The PCV system on my B230F is clogged up and recently popped the oil dipstick tube out of its holder. Of course I immediately thought "clogged flame trap" but I knew it wasn't. Having been working on Volvos for a few years I knew the importance of keeping the flame trap clean. There is also a clearish, thin amber colored oil running down the electrical connector of the cold start injector, but the top part of the injector body is dry (odd!?). This same colored oil is also inside the air bellows at the throttle body and running towards the AMM (not a good thing).
A friend of mine that works at a Volvo dealership told me the flame trap is only part of the story. He said I need to clean the brass nipple in the intake manifold that the small flame trap hose attaches to. He said that needs to be cleaned too.
At any rate, I have been leaking oil at the back of the engine for some time and assumed it was a rear main seal, but recently I added a high mileage engine stop leak to soften and swell the seals. Shortly after that is when the dipstick popped out, so, I'm thinking that perhaps it never had a leaky rear main seal, and that was just the symptom (perhaps the rear half moon cam seal too). So if the PCV system is clogged it is going to exert pressure somewhere and leaky seals are a symptom. I doubt a clogged brass nipple is causing all this havoc - can that be possible?
I suspect the oil separator is clogged up with crap. I am the third owner of this car and the former owners were not maintenance oriented at all (I got the car at 143K). So, what I wanted to know was whether there were any tricks to not have to remove the entire separator but still get the system cleaned out.
My idea was to run some Gunk Motor Oil Flush for the recommended 5 minutes on the can label; shut the engine off; and then pour some of the same Gunk motor flush down the fat upper PCV hose that sits on top of the oil separator, hope it dissolves the crap, take an air hose at what 45psi or 90psi, and try to blow the crap out with pressure; and then drain the oil out and refill with clean oil; and then repeat that procedure perhaps a second time, or more until it is cleaned out. Btw, I am well aware of the importance of making sure the engine is lubricated at all times and the motor flush when used for 5 minutes combined with 3 quarts of oil does not present any problems.
Does anyone see any problems with this procedure other than the oil pump oil screen possibly getting clogged up with loose crap? ... If that is the only issue, do you know of any way to eliminate that from happening or how to get the oil screen clean afterwards?
