Possible to remove manual trans without removing shift lever? 200 1985

Just about got the M46 transmission out of my 1985 245, but here's a question. Can the transmission be removed without removing the shift lever?

I'm working from the green Volvo manuals and that's what it calls for.

The reason I ask is because I had a devil of a time getting to and removing the allen screw securing the gearshift pivot pin. Basically had to drop the rear of the transmission to get room and even then there was precious little.

I suspect the engine/transmission with the gearshift lever was installed as a unit at the factory since it could probably be rotated in such a fashion that the gearshift level would travel upwards though the hole in the floor.

Regards,

Mike
