M46 OD slips out. Do I need a rebuild? Suggestions for NYC? 700

You need new orings installed on the actuating pistons. The overdrive must be separated for the transmission for this work. Volv also has an updated actuating piston, and it may be a good idea to have those installed at the same time. While someone is working on the overdrive, the other orings in the pressure regulating valve and solenoid should be replaced.

My son's first Volvo, a 1987 744T, had the same symptoms. The overdrive worked fine when cold, but the oil was enought thinner at warm temperatures that it would disengage.
