overdrive switch will sometimes not work before 10 km (16 mi) trip 200 1986

Hi,

I have problems switching into overdrive shortly after starting the car. It seems that after this happens, I can usually activate it at almost the same location along my normal journey home at night. The dash overdrive indicator does not work, but I think I misreplaced the bulb when I took the dashboard apart. I can still tell by the audible click and the sound of the engine even though I don't have a tachometer. I have the Bentley service manual. Could anyone suggest a more extensive reference and where it can be acquired? Thanks.

1986 240 DL M46.
