bypass a dead OD solenoid? 200

I hope this works so I can save the $200 or whatever for a new soleinoid...

I have an '89 245, auto tranny, 251,000 miles, and recently it refuses to shift into 4th gear on the highway. It was especially fun to drive my 3-speed volvo home from CT to NH, I think I got about 12 MPG and a headache from the engine. I verified that the overdrive -relay- is ok, I tested with a known good relay and got the same results, leaving me to believe that my OD solenoid is dead. I -never- use OD, that is to clarify I never turn off 4th gear. No towing or mountain driving for this car. Is there any way I can just bypass the solienoid or tamper with things so that my 240 always shifts into 4th? I'd like to avoid my second solienoid in 2 years... thanks!
