new steering rack problems 200

I just had the steering rack replaced in my '91 245. It was leaking and the inner ball joints were loose. Driving the car home from the mechanic, I noticed that I now have a shudder in the steering wheel when I make a turn (both, right and left turns). The outer ball joints and tie rods are ~2-3 yrs old. Any idea what's causing this? Did the mechanic mess up something? Is this common when racks are replaced?
