Rear Engine Seal R&R

Despite rearding the excellent procedural notes by John Sargent, et. al. about this job

(See: http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/EngineSealsBeltsVent.htm#LeakingRearSealandReplacementTips)

I still can't see how to actually remove the seal from the carrier plate, and press in the new seal. (I printed out the seal press tool design from the "Tools" photo gallery)

Any tips?

It looks like the old seal (gray, probably Viton) has a metal ring which is pressed against the housing bore. I can't see hos this could be pulled out without removing the entire ho8sing and seal from the rear of the engine.

Now that I can see it oout of the car, I still need a way to pull and press the seal.

Don't want ot take it to a shop, due to rental return deadline for the transmission jack. Plus, I'm cheap.
