Oil spilling from engine cap. 700 1987

While you are at it, replace the seal on the oil filler cap, the one that is seeping oil. Mine was seeping/leaking and I thought it was the breather system (no flame trap on turbos), but was only the seal on the cap. My oil consumption, which was really leakage out of the filler cap, dropped dramatically. From about 1 quart/1000 miles to about one quarter quart (or less)/1200 miles.

Please note that I am NOT telling you to ignore the breather/flame trap system. Go ahead and clean it out per the 700/900 faq on this site, just change the oil cap seal too.

Spend some time looking at the breather box under the intake manifold. When I first took a quick glance at it I had a cow, it looked so difficult to get at. But over a few weeks and some less hurried looking around, it is not nearly so bad to get too, and should be pretty easy to remove. When taking out the breather box, be careful to leave the tube that runs downward from it into the oil pan in place. DO NOT pull it up or remove it, or you will be pulling the oil pan off to put it back under the clamp down there. Not a fun thing to do with your time.
