Rear Engine Seal R&R

I managed to pry it out using a pair of slip joint pliers while the seal carrier was clamped into my bench vise.

I made the mistake of lubricating the *outside* edge of the new seal before trying to press it into the carrier. Bad idea. I thought it would go in easier with a little "slip-um". All it did was allow it to wobble out the opposite side from where I was pressing it.

Consequently, I tryed some hammering, etc. and really deformed the metal ring of the new seal.

Volvo dealer had on in stock -- at $37.00 !!!!

Next day, I banged up my new tailshaft bushing. Another $43.00 hard luck story.

The Volvo rear seal did come with a plastic shipping ring, which is helpful form pressing the seal into the carriere by hand, as mentioned in the FAQ about the Viton brand (gray or black seal). The Volvo seal I got is gray.

I am crying out loud that I had to pay these dealer prices for parts I had already bought from Nick at FCP Groton for $8 and $12 !!!

Just lost my touch on this job. And still have to take the tailshaft housing to a machine shop today to press in the Volvo bushing and FCPGroton seal.
