Buttons not lighting up 200 1992

A friend replaced the radio in my 1992 245 Volvo radio last weekend with a Sony and he had to remove a few of the console pieces to get it done. My wife noticed last night that none of the buttons such as AC, 4 way flashers, etc. are lit up at night although she can see a little light getting through some of the cracks between the buttons. Is this normal or did my buddy plug the light into the wrong socket? I ask this because he was debating where to plug the light switch in at one point. My wife and I aren't sure any of the buttons ever did light up.
