George, I guarantee that the super strong magnet will grab the housing or cover or ring gear and any other ferrous metal and grip it far more tenaciously than it'll ever grip the itty-bitty shavings...

And you'll end up pulling the cover just to retrieve the magnet.

It might be better to remove the cover and place the magnet somewhere outta harm's way so it can spend a lifetime attracting those shavings...
