1989 240DL rear axle questions 200

My 1989 240DL rear axle has been making noise since I bought it with 204,000 miles. It currently has over 266,000 miles and is starting to get pretty bad. I've heard some years of the 240 series had an option of a limited slip rear axle? I live in New England and having a limited slip would be better in the snow & ice I would think? Does anyone know what range of years the 240DL axles are interchangable and how to identify if it's a limited slip axle?

Thanks,

Volvo4me4ever
