the current state of affairs... what are these engine wires doing?

The problem that my '86 245 has is that it blows black smoke on start up. I then have to give it gas to rev the engine up for a few seconds to blow all the smoke out and get the engine to pass a treshold to where it will idle. After i get beyond this threshold, the engine runs very smoothly and no black smoke.
so, my first step is to figure out all these wiring enigmas.
the mechanic that switched out the original engine left the wires exactly like this. i have not touched them since, 7 years ago. i just want to get the wires where they need to be going. please help!
