side mirror repair 120-130

So... a continuation of my side-mirror project has occured... I bought this mirror used and in pretty good condition with all the chrome in great shape and near-new looking mirror surface. When I bought it however, the ball-and socket joint right behind the mirror (for view adjustment) was frozen. I figured that this would be nothin' a little PBlaster and unloosening of the screw on the back of the joint couldn't solve when I got home.

Unfortunately, I did manage to get the screw loose in the back of the joint, and some PBlaster loosened it all up, but now it will not respond to tightening back up. I have tried going to a hardware store and finding a new screw for it and everything, but no matter how tight I screw it back in at the back, the socket joint just will not tighten up quite enough to make it ready for putting back on the car. I fear that with it just slightly too loose like this, it will just jiggle out of set-alignment within a matter of ten miles or less with normal car vibration.

I can't see how the joint comes apart or I'd be tempted to take it all apart and see how it works so that I could come up with a fixer solution. My guess is that there is some kind of attachement system located interior to the mirror surface which would involve taking out the actual mirror from its frame to get at.

Anybody have some experience with these? This is the variety that looks exactly like the replacement types in the IPD catalogue, with viewable screw-mount holes from the top, and a non-square mirror shape. Volvo is stampted into it also...

Thanks All, as usual!
