Losing acceleration day by day 200 1988

I have a 240DL wagon - 123,000 miles. It has been maintained at every turn, so I am at a loss as to why the Dealer or numerous other mechanics I have used say there is nothing wrong with the car - "it's an old car lady...what do you expect!"

I am the original owner and I know it had much more get-up-and-go two years ago than it does now. The car rarely downshifts when going up hill - and that can be at going 40 or 65 mph. I find I must accelerate when approaching a hill in order to get to the top without moving under the speed limit. And forget about turning left when most cars could make the turn safely.

The car also will sputter [almost stall] when I brake - but not always. I was told by the last mechanic to start the car in two stages: Turn the key to start the electric, and then count to ten before turning to the final stage to start the motor. This has worked, but the idle is often to low and it stalls out.

I have read the 700/900 from start to finish and I have gleaned a few bits of information that may be causing the problem. But as I have read, "keep it simple" to start for that may be all it is.

It would be very helpful to me if any of you Volvo gurus could come up with a "check list" that I could take to a mechanic. I guess I'm also wary of sinking more $$ into this car, if all I will continually get, without qualified ammunition to give the mechanic is: "it's an old car lady...what do you expect!"

I adore this car and can't bear the thought of saying goodbye. I can't think of an automobile out there today that I would want - they all look alike: suppositories that were designed specifically for you not to see, for shinola, your front, rear and the sides of the car. And don't get me started on those plastic bumpers...

Many thanks - I will print out all suggestions and hopefully keep my beloved "tank" for years to come. - Laura,
