Temp & Tank Gauge Malfunction 200 1980

1980 245 DL

Symptoms: Temperature and fuel gauge suddenly simultaneously both went to zero (bottom) while driving. Stop and shut off engine. Re-start engine and both gauges read high (not pinned as if they were grounded) just way high. Fuel is around 1/4 and engine is not overheating.

What I've Done: Immediately suspected the voltage stabilizer. Have tried three replacement voltage stabilizers with no changes. Removed instrument panel and installed replacement circuit board with replacement gauges. These gauges read high same as original gauges. Checked, removed, cleaned terminals and installed new fuze.

Had mechanic install new rings in engine recently but have done nothing that would affect the dash unit.

Thanks so much in advance for your help.
