i think my speedo cable is ka-put. is it hard to change? 200 1982

hi there. took my instrument panel out in order to change some bulbs.

i unscrewed the speedo cable and when i eassembled everything, it no longer works. did i break it or something?

how hard is it to change the wire? i mean, it seems like it would be a nightmare trying to get it up through and behind the dashboard.
