Wow, this and that manual picture means my logically thought out closest to farthest method is exactly opposite of the proper way. Must be something awry with my logic circuits. *zzzzap*

Anyhow, bleeding out all the old fluid is a good idea, even if you aren't putting new pads on. DOT 3/4 gradually absorbs moisture over time, lowering the boiling point as well as increasing its potentioal to internally rust the brake system. Every 4 or 5 years it's a good idea to bleed until you see new fluid on all corners.

If you get the front calipers up to the new lower boiling point you will suddenly have no brakes whatsoever, double triangle split circuit brakes or not.

I got several bottle of DOT 5.1 fluid which I've been using lately. It is compatible and mixable with DOT 3 and 4 fluid, but has properties similar to DOT 5 in terms of performance under duress. They also sell special long life versions with extra additives to handle moisture whhich can supposedly be left in the car for up to 10 years.
