getting a clock out of a 140 140-160

As I gather is the case with most volvo dash clocks of this era, my 144's clock hasn't run since I bought it a year ago. Little round clock, between the two air vents, right in the middle of the dash.

I have found one that works for a fair price. But I have no clue how to get the old one out. I followed the instructions in my service manual, but at a certain point I am just lost at how to loosen the panel which the clock sits in without forcing it or destroying it somehow. Has anyone found an elegant way to take the clock out?
