Shifter Falling Apart? 900 1995

Anybody else have this problem? The shifter for my auto transmission 1995 940 wagon seems to not be doing so well. This is the tall, rounded shifter and not the square one on earlier cars.

It has become very soft (so that if I poke it with my finger nail it leaves a permament dent) and just yesterday, a small chunk of it came off on the back side where the button for shifting gears is at.

Are these easily replacable? I can't seems to find any info about them in the FAQ or through Google. I couldn't find any means of removing the entire plastic/rubber handle.
