A/C on all the time

I'm not really sure how much of a problem this is, now that the weather has heated up here in Texas, but my A/C compressor doesn't turn off when I turn the temp control off. It does still turn off when I remove one of the leads from the low pressure sensor on the dryer, but the lead from the firewall stays hot no matter what the position of the thermostat control on the dash. Is it reasonable to assume that the thermostat has failed? And does anyone know how hard it is to replace? thanks.
