Our 1983 GL has about 80,000 miles on it; we are the second owners.
My son drives the car. We had been having some oil loss, and paid huge dollars to fix the front and rear main seals; we then cleaned up the PCV stuff (except the breather box; changing the flame trap and the tube from the box to the intake manifold addressed the PCV issues, it appears).
However, we still have some significant oil consumption. My son didn't bother to CHECK the oil for a while, of course, and will be changing the oil today, but it appears we consumed 2 qts in 6000 miles. (It still registers on the dip stick, but is well below the 1 qt--add oil mark). One suggestion our dealer had when we paid the small fortune for the seals was the head gasket may be leaking.
The oil looks dirty, but not foamy; black but not greenish or brownish; and the car seems to run fine. There seems to be some white in the exhaust when the engine is first running, but it doesn't appear to be more than most other cars, and the exhaust doesn't appear or smell smoky. Is the head gasket implicated here? If so, is that something a couple of neophytes can do, or should we find an affordable service station? If we should do the head gasket (either ourselves or through a garage), are there other things that should be done while it is opened up? (e.g., is that a good time to check and adjust valve clearances)?
