Trans noise on m46 1985 740

I just gave my 1985 740 to my niece to have a reliable car and within a week the darn trans starting making a funky noise.

I have not had it up yet, but the noise, while driving in gear, sounds almost like a frayed speedo cable, rubbing against the clutch plate. Or like a small branch rubbing against the driveline. The speedo still works though, and the sound, which happens in both reverse and forward gears, is intermittent.

The clutch seems to engage okay, although the o.d. unit has not been working for quite a while. I'm wondering if it would be okay to drive this for about 10 miles to get it back to my garage?

any ideas on what this could be?
