Flame trap on DOHC engine? 900

re: 91 940GLE (4cyl with DOHC)

There is a cylindrical canister which resembles a small oil filter, roughly 2 to 3" diameter, above the starter motor.

A widget which probably houses the flame trap attaches to the top of the cylinder.

The widget and the canister separated. The widget has a flared plastic end which can fit over the nipple at the top of the canister. I pushed the widget back onto the canister nipple.

I have no documentation on these items. Is the canister a filter which should be cleaned or replaced? Is there supposed to be a clamp which holds the widget onto the canister nipple?

Thanks,
