Auto transmission slow to engage when cold 200 1982

My spouse's 1982 245 GL wagon (349k km on odometer) with an auto transmission (no overdrive) is slow to engage when shifting from Park or Neutral to Drive or any lower gear. It may sit in gear for 60 seconds or more without engaging when the outside temp is near, or below, freezing. If you let the car warm up a bit it's fine, or if you rev it up a bit when cold it usually engages. It has been like this for years and several mechanics have said the tranny's strong and we should just live with it.

Any ideas as to the cause of this?
