Help! What did I do wrong? (Auxiliary Air Valve) 200 1978

Yesterday, I removed the Auxiliary Air Valve to ensure that is what it really is because I plan to replace it. I took off the upper and lower hoses and unclipped the plug from the top of it. Then I cleaned some of the grime off and screwed it back on to the valve cover and hooked it back up in the same manner that I removed it. Now for some reason my car will start up for a few seconds and idle very roughly and then die. After that it won't fire up unless I wait a while and then it will repeat the above. (There should be a picture of the AAV in this post)

What do I need to do to get it to start up and run again.

Thanks
