exhaust leak when started 700 1989

1989 760 gle,,v-6 not turbo

when first started in the morning there is an exhaust leak sound under the drivers door area. after it runs and warms up it seems to go away. is the system a welded one or can a part be replaced if i find a leak? is this a common problem? the last smog check it barely passed, could this be part of that problem??? any ideas to fix it greatly appreciated. least expensive the better!!!
