Fuel sender problem (?) 140-160

I'm having trouble with the fuel gauge on my '71 145 (B20, M41, Weber conversion). What happens is the gauge goes down to "E" (and I mean off the map where you can't see it at all) once you get through about 1/4 to 1/3 of the gas in the tank. Fill it up and the thing reads full again. Years ago I had the same problem and the mechanic replcaed my fuel sender- fixed the problem. Not wanting to spend another $150-$200 on this (as I'm looking to sell soon) I thought someone might 1) know how to tell me to look for something that needs to be freed up or something like that or 2) have a good fuel sender at a reasonable price. Thanks
