Anybody who knows California vehicle modification laws, I have a question 700

I am interested in the MegaSquirt Fuel Injection System (don't worry, this isn't a technical post). I talked to my uncle who said that I should check and be sure that it is legal to modify my fuel injection system. Is it legal or do I have to have the stock EFI controller in there? Can I get my car smogged with the Megasquirt installed or does it constitue an automatic fail? I was thinking that as long as IPD modifications are legal (are they?) that this would be too but I am just not sure. If anyone has had any experience with this, please let me know.

Thanks,
Eamon
