Changing Strut housing tube - Need advice 200 1982

I have ordered a good used front strut housing tube from Hirsch. I intend to douse the unit still in the car with PB blaster in advance. It has a rust hole in the cup so its time to replace.I also ordered a new wheel bearing kit.I also intend to replace the hardware (Strut top nut, other threaded fasteners etc.)What I need to know is what is anybodies previuos experience doing this ? I replaced stuts before but not the housing tube.I find it troublesome when disconnecting the strut the piston rod pushes out & is hard to get back in. Any advice appreciated.
