M47 tranny work in 1985 Turbo Wagon? 200 1985

The M46 overdrive in my 85 Turbo Wagon started acting up last winter - wouldn't engage, "slipped" when it did engage, etc., although it is not so bad now that warm weather is here.

According to the Bently Blue Book, beginning in 1987 Volvo went to a straight mechanical 5-speed. Is this a better transmission?

And, most importantly, will the M47 bolt right into my 85? Will I have to change the drive shaft?

Thanks,

Dave
