'94 960's engine races at idle all of a sudden 900

so while out on my lunchbreak from work today i was driving back and i noticed the RPMs would not go down at all. in drive keeping around 2000RPM and 3k in neutral/park.

its gotten worse on my way to class as it now will idle at 4k in park. is this an ECT failure? i just got it from the shop for a valve job and the real fine upstanding human being my mechanic was broke the thermostat housing/thermostat (oh of course i got charged is there any other way?.....yeah i could have said something but i just wanted my car back) sooo possibly would that have contributed to this problem.

Thanks!
