Good p.m. and may this find you well. If you suspect the tensioner is failing, have the car towed to a mechanic. Do not drive it an inch. If the tensioner fails en-route, your folks have a hugely costly repair.

A car with 53K miles should not be put a risk. The cost of a tow is nothing, compared with the cost of head/valve repairs.

It might be a good idea to flush the tranny, with synethetic trans fluid. That might help to cure the crunch. Even if it is doesn't, 50K is enough value from the trans fluid: it doesn't owe anyone a penny.
